Our History

The Smith family has been serving the manufacturers and job shops in the Mountain States for four generations. Arthur Smith began selling machine tools in 1923 and his son Edward joined him in 1936. Tracy Smith started his career in 1956. Together Edward and Tracy started Smith Machinery in 1960. Clark Smith,  the company's President, joined Smith Machinery in 1981. This long history has enabled us to represent some of the finest machine tool builders in the world; Mazak Corp., Star CNC, Flow International, Marvel/Spartan and Mazak Optonics (Laser) Corp. to name a few.

Members of AMTDA

We are proud to be active members of the American Machine Tool Distributors Association (AMTDA). By providing it's members educational opportunities, certification programs and industry statistics, AMTDA is advancing and improving the performance of machine tool distributors. Clark Smith is currently serving as the Chairman of AMTDA for the 2004-05 term.

 The Certified Machine Tool Sales Engineer (CMTSE) Program by AMTDA is the only nationally recognized program that acknowledges individuals who possess the skills and knowledge needed to perform effectively as machine tool sales engineers. All of Smith Machinery's Sales Engineers are CMTSE's!
